WZebra |
One of the best Othello programs is WZebra from Gunnar Anderson. It includes a very strong computer opponent, features to analyze games and you can use the Thor-database with it. |
|
Ntest |
Ntest is one of the strongest Othello programs and was written by Chris Welty. NBoard is a graphical user interface for Ntest. Ntest's midgame evaluation is said to be a little better than WZebra's. For most users WZebra's analysing features should be the reason to go for WZebra. Because of the small advantage in midgame evaluation and the automatic book building Ntest should be interesting for experts. |

Booby Reversi |
This small Othello program - only 189 KB - is very strong, too. It does not include features like a practice session or Thor-support, but it's outstanding, because of its strong AI and its small size. |
|
Logistello |
In 1997, Logistello beat the Worldchamp Takeshi Murakami in six matches "without any weakness" 6-0. Since that day, it is a fact, that human beings do not have a chance against good Othello programs anymore. The German Michael Buro, who attended the WOC 1994 for Germany with colleague Igor Ðurðanovic, has been living in the United States for some years and now lives in Canada. On his homepage, he offers Logistello's source code and some other interesting things, e.g. the matches Murakami vs. Logistello and Tominaga vs. Logistello. |
Java-Othello-Applets
|
Reversi by Wolf |
The Swiss Thomas Wolf programmed this applet with four levels. It is one of the strongest applets I know. There could be a problem for players who use the browser Opera. |
|
Devastator |
This applet programmed by the German Florian Lindauer is quite strong. You can set the thinking depth. |
|
Marvin |
The German Sebastian Voges unfortunately does not have enough time to keep programming this strong applet. According to the programmer " there still is much to improve", but he does not have time. |
|
Nutello |
Nutello is not really strong and unfortunately it is very slow at a higher level. Advantages are many settings, e.g. size of the board, level, kind of strategy. |
End game programs
|
Icare |
Icare is a very good program to practice the end game skills. The program gives a position with only 6-12 empty squares left. The player has to find the (only!) way to win (or to draw). |
|
Happy End |
Beppi Menozzi's End game program is comparable with Icare. Advantages are more features and it's more up to date. Disadvantages are for example, that you only have one chance and you can not undo moves. Beginners or intermediate players may get scared if they get comments like: "Are you crazy or what!? Oh, maybe you're just joking me? Unless you're completely stupid..." |
